Hannover 2012

The Choir visit to Hannover in June surpassed all expectations. Led by Maeve our MD, the small group of just 13 singers (4 sops, 6 altos, no tenors and 3 basses) was not the voice balance we would have chosen. We had extra rehearsals at Maeve’s home and with some trepidation set off persuading ourselves ‘let’s enjoy the visit as a short holiday and do our best, it is not a competition’. We were treated to a wonderful welcome at Hannover airport by members of the Canta Nova Choir who were enthusiastically waving Union Jacks and Germany flags.  We were all presented with reading glass cloths bearing the Hannover transport system map before being escorted to our accommodation.  Most of the choir stayed at the Loccumer Hof in central Hannover.  A few members were hosted by their German friends. As one would expect in Germany, Hannover boasts a highly efficient transport system.

We enjoyed some sight-seeing with the Bristol/Hannover exchange people and a reception at the Rathaus with the Lord Mayor of Hannover. We went around the pristine historical cities of Hannover and Hildesheim including a lively food market and a very interesting historical church.  German residents are automatically (unless they can prove for non-religious reasons) taxed for the upkeep of churches. After a disastrous rehearsal for a concert the following day, held at an up-market Old Peoples Home, thankfully we managed to produce a pleasing result. Afterwards in the Home’s Dining Room we enjoyed a meal with Canta Nova and later, Lars,a C. Nova member, took us to a Bierkeller. However, the highlight of the visit for all was singing with Canta Nova in the Marktkirch. This was a service in celebration of the 65th Anniversary of the Bristol/Hannover Twinning Association. The Church had amazing acoustics and C. N. is a wonderful choir with lots of men!
